One can almost feel the excitement of the snowy, nighttime scene created by Mort Künstler, the nation’s foremost painter of Civil War and other military scenes.

The painting originated in 1992 with an invitation from the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh for a one-man exhibition of Mr. Kunstler’s Civil War art. Mr. Kunstler decided to create a new painting that symbolized North Carolina’s important role in the war. Featuring Confederate troops and civilians, it represents North Carolina's major contribution to the war: its people. The snowy night scene is set on Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street near the North Carolina Capitol - appropriately near the modern site of the new museum.

From visionary pop artist of the 1960's, to master of dynamic neo Expressionism, Peter Max and his vibrant colors have become part of the fabric of contemporary American culture. In the 1960's Max rose to prominence with his now-famous "Cosmic '60s" style, a bold linear type of painting which employed Fauvist use of color and depicted transcendental themes. Peter Max revolutionized art of the 60’s just as the Beatles transformed the music of the decade. As his expressionistic style evolved, becoming more sensuous and painterly, Max’s unique symbolism and vibrant color palette have continued to inspire new generations of Americans throughout the decades.
